Big Rock Candy Mountain

Baby Gramps

The Big Rock Candy Mountain has been a favourite song of mine about as long as I can remember. One of the first records I owned was the Burl Ives version. I’m sure some of you are thinking, ah-ha that explains a lot.

Here’s Baby Gramps. Baby Gramps leaves me speechless…

Bill Dooley…

And finally, Sourdough Slim…

This is a hobo song. Utah Phillips used to distinguish between hobos, bums and tramps, referring to tramps as the intelligencia of the “Traveling Nation”. He said, “Hobos work and wander, bums drink and wander and tramps dream and wander.”

  2. Roger Whittaker did a version of Big Rock Candy Mountain on a 1975 kids’ album called “The Magical World of Roger Whittaker.” I loved the whole thing but that song in particular sent my child brain swirling. It was AWESOME even though I didn’t get half of it.
